De Wys writes of her amazing encounter with a Shuar master as he guides her into a world of potent visionary plants, harrowing initiations and ritual purification - the path of the warrior. An adventure story, a romance and an exploration of a little known culture, it captures her physical, emotional and holy voyage.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down, read it in just two days. It was inspirational!
Not For Sissies

I've just read this amazing book, 'Black Smoke, by Margaret De Wys. Of all the books I've read about westerners' adventures in South America this is by far the most compelling. Her connection with her teacher, a Shaman from Ecuador, her life lessons and her own unfolding as a healer are truly jaw-dropping. Margaret's writing style is lyrical, but what is most affecting is her own heroic journey from illness to almost mythical strength and health though her path. The book is a testament to finding our own courage to heal. Nadiya Nottingham, New York

I very rarely read memoirs, but something about this book just seemed so appealing. I loved the adventure and the spirit of it. I thought that it was captivating and applaud De Wys for her sincerity. All of us can learn from Margaret De Wys's journey: Traveling the road less taken can help us find faith where we least expect. Highly recommended!
