This is a heart touching story of an elephant that lives with his mom and dad but is very lonely because he cannot find any friends. Gorbachev uses size as an issue amongst the characters. The text is engaging and flows with the life-like drawings filled with watercolors. The illustrations are lively and keep the readers on their toes wondering if the elephant is going to be able to participate in the next game his small friends choose to play. Stark contrasts appear in the pictures as large the items in the house are compared to little elephant's size and the size of him compared to his new friends. This is perfectly fitting for children who are just beginning to feel comfortable being themselves. A fine message highlights the test of new friendships, and is sure to be enjoyed from cover to cover. An easy read for smaller children.
