Pleasant reading about former major leaguers and their lives after baseball

Unless they run afoul of the law, former major league baseball players, no matter how big a star, tend to fade out of sight. Yet, when they played, they were heroes to us, doing things that we can only dream about and embodying our hopes for a World Series championship. In this book, the authors, where both have worked for newspapers, travel to the spring training bases of some of the major league teams. While there, they look up some former players and managers and discuss what they have done after baseball. The players are not what you would consider superstars, just some who performed at an above average level. The players featured are: *) Earl Battey *) Bruce Dal Canton *) Bob Watson *) Doc Edwards *) Chuck Tanner *) Kent Tekulve *) Ted White *) Max and Hal Lanier *) Monte Irvin *) Denny Doyle *) Ron LeFlore The conversations with the former players are brief, there is no real depth. Their discussions are those that take place when two baseball people meet, one a fan and the other a former player, have a polite conversation about the life of the player and then they go their separate ways. This is a nice book with a great deal of appeal to the fan of many years. Nearly all of the players are from the sixties and seventies and if you followed baseball back then, you will remember their careers. I enjoyed reading it; it is pleasurable to read about former players who had a normal life after baseball.
