I loved this book. It captures you quickly and pulls you through the tragic and comic life of Joseph, a brilliant, half-Jewish boy who survives WWII in a scientific institute to finally deal with his survivor's guilt thirty years later. This book won awards and rave reviews when it was published. It is totally worth it. The writing is great. Thread after thread interweaves from the beginning to the end. Joseph is an eccentric and real character. Read it!
Berlin Wall

Berlin Wild is an unforgettable book and Elly Welt a consummate writer. If you feel overstuffed with stories from the holocaust, read Berlin Wild. This is a powerful and moving novel about a half Jewish boy who brings us into the Kaiser Wilhem Institute where early experiments with uranium were made. An important book in the story of my own life and perhaps yours too, or someone you know.I want to read everything she's written. She wins my highest praise for prose that evokes more than it narrates.
Outstanding novel

Though many books bring us back to the holocaust, Berlin Wild-- set in a research laboratory outside Berlin-- gives a unique perspective on the tragedy as experienced by a small clique of research scientists. "Don't you think the German people were ashamed the day after Kristallnacht? And what did they do about it? Nothing! Nothing!" Elly Welt is a stunning writer-- as masterful with comedy as with tragedy. I laughed and cried. It is also a wise book that sticks in my mind long after I finished reading it.
