Beneath The Square (The Life and Times of Southern Appalachian journalist, Will Reed.)

The first in a series of "Will Reed" books. In the Southern Appalachian Mountains lies a small cosmopolitan city, a center of government and cultural activity. Beneath the city, an underground area was created in the mid-1920s and then abandoned as the city made way for new urban development. Again in the late 1960s, there is another building renaissance. In the process of this urbanization and redevelopment, a number of people who reside in the affected area are displaced. After their eviction, they move into and occupy the old abandoned underground area that was created in the 1920s. These people, whom I refer to as "shadow-people" exist in this environment in relative obscurity. However, they do keep a watchful eye out for their neighbors who live above ground. My name is Will Reed and I am fortunate to be one of those whom the "shadow people" keep within their watchful sight.
