ISBN 0764152165 - All of the reviews I've seen on this book left me confused, so I thought I'd start out by clearing up one thing for others: while the book is cute, it's meant to be educational (hence the publication by Barron's Educational Series). Until I knew that, I was lost as to the purpose of the book. Animal friends Lucy, Eddie and Alabaster try to figure out the purpose of belly buttons (and explaining the use of nipples while they're at it). They know they all have one, and they discover that Daisy the duck doesn't have one at all, but they have no real clues - just some funny ideas! Every parent knows what it's like to have a child asking a million questions and, sooner or later, "what's a belly button for?" is likely to be on the list. Rather than say the first thing that comes to mind, this book offers a way to actually, correctly, answer it in language young children can understand. Author Jutta Langreuter does a superb job here, putting together a simple answer to a difficult-to-answer question in a fun and funny way. My only complaint is that the book doesn't explain why Daisy doesn't have a belly button; parents can answer that question, but it wouldn't have been hard to work into the text. The illustrations, by Andrea Hebrock, are adorable. Every two-page spread has one full-page image, which leaves a lot of canvas for images. Hebrock fills that space with colorful and engaging images. - AnnaLovesBooks
Cute and Quirky

The characters and story are adorable. Answers questions about belly buttons, but is mostly just fun. Very cute illustrations. I bought it for my son (who is far too young for it yet), and I'm buying another as a gift.Originally in German, it does have an offbeat, subtly different cultural feel to it -- hard to put your finger on.Downsides? Rather long for little ones. Type is small and slapped on the page dead center rather than being attractively designed.
