In this first book in a trilogy, the warring interstellar empires of the Inner Sphere face the greatest threat of their lives--an invasion by the technologically superior Clans. It falls to the leaders of the Five Successor States to save their people from ultimate destruction.
A really good and supriseingly hard science fiction novel

A great start to Michael Stackpole's Battletech novels, this one serves as an introduction to the whole Clan invasion, and is great for any fan of Battetech. Battletech itself seems odd, as few people would guess that giant robots blasting each other would be a good example of hard science fiction yet the novels are a a vocabulary building exercise in hard science fiction with just faster then light travel and the prime conceit that giant robots are the kings of the battlefield as places where it strays from very hard science fiction. Read it, it's good. It will teach you what magnetohydrodynamic means.

Stackpole did a great job for this book. One problem ; needs more a of a glossary.Like Twilight Of The Clans showing the 'Mechs, jumpships, tanks, dropships, and Areospace Fighters. But that was only a minore problem.
Great intro to Battletech novels

After playing the Battletech board game for years, this was the first novel I've read. It is fantastic. Mr. Stackpole keeps you on the edge of your chair with a masterful blend of suspense, satire, and action; all woven together with political intrigue. I dare you to put it down!
Movie? Why not?

This was the first btech novel I read. Although i found it hard then, to understand this book, i wouldn't reccomend to first timers. It took a few more novels until I read it again and loved it. The effort stackpole has put in this novel is amazing. The characters eg, Vladimir ward, Phelan kell and Kai Allard are exceptionally well. Vlad's brute force, fiendish mind and role as the heel made him my favourite in the novel and still is throughout all Stackpole's novel's. This novel and the trilogy should definately be made into a movie. It would surely please the current fans of the series and no doubt bring hundreds more. This trilogy is one of the more keypoints in the battletech world, with the coming of the clans. a movie made from this would be easily possible with the support it would be shown.
GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
