The U.S. aviation system is one of the safest in the world with an extremely low accident rate. This record reflects the efforts of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air carriers, airports, aviation manufacturers, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and others to continually improve aviation safety. Focus on safety continues to be important, particularly in light of projected air traffic growth over the next 20 years. In keeping with this anticipated growth, FAA is seeking to further enhance safety by shifting to a proactive, data-driven, risk-based approach to safety oversight referred to as a safety management system (SMS).
