Book Overview

The Teeth of the Tiger (1921) is a novel by Maurice Leblanc. Blending crime fiction, fantasy, and mystery, Leblanc crafts original and entertaining tales of adventure starring one of the greatest literary characters of all time--Ars ne Lupin, gentleman thief. Partly based on the life of French anarchist Marius Jacob, Lupin first appeared in print in 1905 as an answer to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes.

Ars ne Lupin is the world's greatest thief, an unmatched force for good whose exploits threaten the wealth and standing of France's most wicked men. In this installment of Leblanc's beloved series, Lupin uses his remarkable wit and chameleon-like ability to move undetected through aristocratic society in order to steal, trick, and cheat his way through life. Despite his criminal nature, he operates under a strict moral code, only taking from those who have taken from the poor all their lives. Don Luis Perenna is a man with a mysterious past. Known only to his closest comrades by his real name, Perenna is none other than Ars ne Lupin, the gentleman thief. Named executor of the will of Cosmo Mornington, a wealthy philanthropist and a friend since the days of the Great War, Perenna is tasked with tracking down his many heirs. One by one, they begin to turn up dead, forcing the thief to join forces with the police in order to clear his name. The Teeth of the Tiger is a tale of romance, mystery, and crime that continues to astound over a century after it was published.

Lupin's best

The teeth of the tiger is (possibly) the best Lupin novel. It is as exciting as the short novels such as the crystal stopper or the hollow needle; it has a historical flavor as did the hollow needle or 813; it has romance (which is never absent in Lupin's adventures); and it has a great architecture as 813 did. The only part that the modern reader will find a bit inconsistent with the sensibility of our times is the discussion of how Lupin conquered Mauritania and of why France had legitimate colonial ambitions. But if the reader is willing to forgive Leblanc for being, to some extent, the product of his time, the reader will enjoy immensely this exciting Lupin's adventure

Maurice Leblanc's best

This is one of the three Arsene Lupin written during WW1, with 'Le Triangle d'Or' and 'L'ile aux trente cercueils'. It is an outstanding read. Leblanc is not just writing adventure stories. His style is fluid and expressive, a model in French high schools and colleges. The plot is very satisfying. The hero is greatest through his failings. The book is sincere, and the love story within is unlike any other Lupin. But first and foremost, this is a great thriller, a page-turner to put Grisham to shame. If you plan to read all the Lupins, keep this one last as you'll never find one to top it.
