Aretha Louise Franklin was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1942. Landing in Detroit, Michigan in the late 1940s, she became a musical prodigy under the guidance of her preacher father - the Reverend C. L. Franklin.Notwithstanding early tragedy and heartbreak, Aretha's talent bloomed in her East Boston Boulevard home and in her dad's New Bethel Baptist Church. Moving from Gospel to Jazz, she signed a major recording contract with Columbia Records at the age of 18.
