After a three-hour flight from Kabul, an overnight stay in a Dubai rescue centre followed by an 8-hour flight to London, he is finally here. In May 2017, six months after applying to adopt a Nowzad rescue, we find ourselves driving to the Animal Reception Centre at Heathrow Airport. We are bringing home a dog we have never even met, with only photos and a couple of short videos to go on, to live with us in his forever home. We never set out to adopt an overseas rescue, let alone one from a war-torn country in the Middle East. In fact, a pooch of manageable knee height from a local charity was what we had in mind (my husband and I are both 5 ft 6"/165cm). But Darakht the Afghan Street Hound stole our hearts.
