This is a compelling story ......

Angel Eyes by Myrna Mackenzie Signature Select Spotlight - May 2006 Twelve years ago, Sarah left her family and never looked back. Now upon her father's death, she finds that he's left her the retail shop he once forced her to work in. So she returns to Gold Tree, to dispose of the shop and to get to know her sister and mother again but then she'll be on her way. Her homecoming brings a lot of local gossip, as Sarah was once the town attraction, her psychic ability to find lost things and people had been a huge drawing. Luke's a newcomer to Gold Tree; he and his son. He joined the local police department and moved in next door to Sarah's family. Luke feels a loyalty to Sarah's mother Madeline. She's been taking care of his three year old son, Danny and he knows that she's been struggling since her husband's death, both financially and with her other daughter, 18 year old Cass. Luke's a widower and has no intention of marrying again. He's seen too much hurt in marriage, both his own and his parents. When the town's people start harassing Sarah, demanding that she help them find lost loves and items, Luke feels protective of her. He comes to realize the cruelty that she had endured as a child. He also finds that Sarah has a fear for the past and a real fear for the shop. Something horrible used to happen there. But Sarah doesn't want Luke's protection. She'll never need a man, never love a man, and never have children. But the attraction between Luke and Sarah is very strong, and soon Sarah is afraid that the town's gossip will harm Luke's career and put a shadow over Danny. This is a compelling story. The underlying theme was about controlling men; Sarah's father, Luke's father, Cass' boyfriend. Each sought power and manipulated those around them to get it. I liked the way Luke and Sarah's relationship evolved. Luke's a stand up guy who wants only to lead a quiet life in a good community with his son. Sarah's learnt to be strong over the years. The horrors that she's seen have made her isolate herself from people. She feels that all she can do is cause pain. They gently help each other see that isolation isn't the answer. I'm not sure how I came to have this book. I don't remember selecting it, but I must have. This is a longer book than I'm used to, but Ms. Mackenzie made it flow. I would definitely read something from this author again.

fine paranormal romantic suspense

As she nears her thirtieth birthday, Sara Tucker does not want to come home from California where she hides from people and commitment, but her widow mom Madeline begged her as her younger sister Cass is in trouble. Sara reaches Gold Tree, Wisconsin, a place she fled twelve years ago when her avaricious father tried to use her psychic gifts to find missing people and objects; the townsfolk consider her a freak or worse a devil. Waiting at her mom's home is single dad police officer Luke Packard to inform Sara her mom had an accident in which she hurt her ankle. She learns her mom watches Luke's two years old son Danny. Luke not only believes psychics are fake he hates them as his wife died because of one of them. However, as he protects Sara from someone stalking her and she tries to connect and protect her jealous (of her) pregnant eighteen years old sibling who is seeing an abusive drug dealer with plans for Sara, they fall in love, but neither foresees a future together. ANGEL EYES is a fine paranormal romantic suspense starring a fascinating female protagonist and a skeptical cop falling in love with both knowing they have no future together. The thriller elements come in late as Cass' boyfriend plans to use Sara's skill for personal gain just like her father did. Sara's gift is mostly implied rather than applied, but still the tale grips the audience with the reactions of family and neighbors to the return of the prodigal daughter who is different than everyone else.
