Florence Starr Taylor's energetic drawings capture the spirit of the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in the first half of this century. "The simplicity of these drawings . . . echoes the life-style of [Taylor's] subjects. Taylor portrays the Amish farmers at work, in contemplation, or socializing with family and friends. The children and women are similarly captured in the midst of their usual activities. None is specifically posed for the artist . . . Graybill supplies a pleasant introduction to Taylor and her work." -- Booklist
Florence Starr Taylor has a special gift. Her drawings seem to have movement! One of my favorite drawings is "In Mother's Step"..I can feel the slight tug on the little girl's arm, and a swish of their skirts. In "Leaving the Graveyard"..I hear the slow muffled clip clop of the horse's hooves on the dirt road..The drawing before that "Saying Goodbye" made my eyes tear..many of us have been there...you can feel the quiet, somber mood.. Taylor captures the true spirit of these hardworking, simple people. A meditative book to be used when looking for some strength.
