Kabul, Afghanistan, remains a front line within a bureaucratic civil war, where spooks, soldiers, fanatics and narcotics collide in profit and death. Added to the mix are rumors of a heroin operation now run by America's largest and most respected private security firm. With no legal remedy on hand, Mack Bolan is dispatched on a scorched-earth mission that threatens to expose more than just hand-holding deep inside the Beltway. With his identity compromised from the start, the Executioner hooks up with a seasoned DEA agent and local informant, blowing out the infrastructure of a massive narco-traffic operation brick by brick, and exposing the long arm of a traitor.

Super Bolan #129 written by Mike Newton has as its locale areas in Afghanistan near the Pakistan border region. "In 1999, the Afghanis had 350 square miles of opium poppies under cultivation, with smack refineries operating around the clock (page 45).". Nangarhar Province is one area of many inside Afghanistan involved in the heroin trade and it is the spot where Matt Cooper/Brandon Stone (Mack Bolan) decides to open his war against Vanguard International and other Afghanistan citizens involved in the heroin traffic from Afghanistan across the Pakistan border region. Though the DEA has been involved investigating this problem for some time no remedy exists, even the CIA is turned to the dark side. Last resort Mack Bolan is sent in to turn his kind of war loose on this lawless situation, and as Mack puts it "It's time to reproach and punish evil, once and for all. Beginning here and now." This 315 page novel has very little let up as The Executioner, aided by a DEA employee, Diedre Falk, carry out a scorch and burn destruction of Vanguard's organization. As Hal Brognola tells Bolan, "Do what you have to do.". With Mack playing for keeps it quickly leads to an explosive and 'altered state' ending. These Super Bolans have been rolling off the presses since April, 1984, with publication of TERMINAL VELOCITY, yet they still continue to contain as much reading excitment as that first one of 25 years back. If you enjoy the GOLD EAGLE books about Mack Bolan-the Executioner, you will have to add this one to your list of good reading. Semper Fi.
