Book Overview

"A tightly spun debut that wrestles with many intense ideas and ends with a knife twist that will send readers racing back to the beginning again." --ALA Booklist (starred review)

Orange Is the New Black meets Walter Dean Myers's Monster in this gritty, twisty, and haunting story about a girl convicted of murder seeking the truth while surviving life in a group home, from New York Times bestselling author Tiffany D. Jackson.

Mary B. Addison killed a baby.

Allegedly. She didn't say much in that first interview with detectives, and the media filled in the only blanks that mattered: A white baby had died while under the care of a churchgoing black woman and her nine-year-old daughter. The public convicted Mary and the jury made it official. But did she do it?

There wasn't a point to setting the record straight before, but now she's got Ted--and their unborn child--to think about. When the state threatens to take her baby, Mary's fate now lies in the hands of the one person she distrusts the most: her Momma. No one knows the real Momma. But does anyone know the real Mary?

ALLEGEDLY by Tiffany D. Jackson I don’t usually read YA, but I’m glad I gave this a chance because I love an unreliable narrator. At the tender age of nine Mary killed a baby. *Allegedly* At least that what people believe. After doing her time in “baby jail”, she’s now 16 and living in a group home. Mary is smart, clever yet also still naive about how the real world works. Now that’s she expecting a baby of her own, she wants to clear her name. Mary’s story and experiences are tragic, heavy yet compelling and disturbing. While I knew how this was going to end, that didn’t stop me from feeling sorry for and sympathizing with Mary’s circumstances. The real story here is the unjust treatment and brutality experienced by POC on a daily basis. I feel the author did a great job at conveying those themes with the narrative. Overall, a solid psychological thriller. It won’t be for everyone, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Recommend, but check trigger warnings. [ Note: While the plot is different, this reminds me of another excellent book; Upstate by Kalisha Buchanan. It also highlights similar themes. ] Rating: 4/5 ⭐️

Books with unreliable narrators are the literary equivalent of the sand shifting under our feet. Told from the POV of characters who can't (or won't) provide a complete or accurate account, they are, at once, both bewildering and thrilling. If you like this kind of story, here are ten great titles to consider.
