This book is perhaps one of the best ESL books I've come across recenlty. It is easy to read and understand. It is practical and it gives lots of great suggestions without sounding pompous or preachy. The book would make a suitable textbook for those studying to be an ESL teacher, or a good reference for those who are already an ESL teacher. The book is divided into clear chapters, giving the reader some practical hints on how to welcome a newcomer into the class, and how to create an inclusive classroom. The book then goes into how English works, often citing and detailing the famous experts of language acquisition like Krashen, Cummins, Mohan and Swain just to name a few. Coelho also gives the reader ideas on how to integrate languge and content instruction, and finally, she goes into assessment options. The book is full of pictures and cartoons, with sidebar hints and cautions, as well as an annotated reference section at the end of each chapter. A very practical and useful book.
