As a long-time fan of Emma Drummond, I have to admit to being disappointed by the latest installment in this series. Perhaps the author was wearying of the family saga and of Val's exploits and character in particular. Perhaps it also because WWI, the latest time period she writes about, is difficult to write about in the sort of romantic style that is her trademark. That having been said, Drummond is a past master at depicting the milieu of British military families of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The focus she puts on the strain that living up to or in spite of familial expectations put on individuals and their relationships is always special. Her use of history and exotic backgrounds always fascinates me. Emma Drummond certainly deserves to be better known. Most of her books are out of print, and I had to scour used book stores to find copies of them. She also writes as Elizabeth Darrell. All of her books deserve to be reprinted.
