Author Emma Wiley has returned home to Hope, Iowa after purchasing the farmhouse of her late boyfriend's family.
Best friend, Holly, sets Emma up with handsome Lawrence Splicer. They hit it off but his ex-wife is less than thrilled and makes sure Emma knows it. Emma also enjoys hanging out with neighbor, William Reed, who is a freelance newspaper reporter and owns a bookstore.
Sensing she might be able to help him solve a mystery, William tells her about an accident that occurred several years earlier. Six people were killed and two children were orphaned. Things take a dangerous turn when someone breaks into Emma's house and ransacks her office. Emma and her sister, Elizabeth, try to figure out why she was targeted. Then Emma remembers receiving a mysterious letter a few weeks earlier that she never opened.
The sisters retrieve the letter. It's a confession that matches up with the cold-case accident. Emma tries to talk to the woman she thinks sent her the letter and is shocked to find out that the woman has been murdered. Then Emma is ambushed in her own driveway by a man who had inserted himself into her life shortly after she moved to town. He takes the letter and flees.
Emma and William meet up with Howard, the retired cop who told William about the accident. As they all share what they've learned, the pieces of the puzzle quickly fall into place. But the bigger surprise is that one of the orphans from the accident might actually be someone close to Emma.
