Book Overview

Dee Brestin entreats Sisters, we must treasure the two Bible books named after women (Esther and Ruth), for they are God's special gifts to us! Through Esther, I have heard my Heavenly Father say, Do you feel I am far away? I am here, I am not silent, and I am the God of surprises. Do you question your value in this world? I created you uniquely as a woman, and I long to use you mightily as I used Esther. Come, learn from her. Do you feel you have failed in this life? I am the God of second chances. Come, let Me give you hope. Controversy abounds in the Book of Esther! Was Vashti wrong to disobey her husband? Did the beauty contest Esther won involve a night in bed with the king? You will learn important principles of interpretation to guide you not only through Esther, but through all of Scripture. This guide is one of a series written by Dee especially with the interests of women, and the way they like to relate, in mind. Dee Brestin ministers to the hearts of women with her speaking and writing. Besides her many Bible study guides, she is the author of the bestsellers The Friendships of Women, The Friendships of Women Workbook, and We Are Sisters. She and her husband, Steve, are the parents of five children and live in Kearney, Nebraska Other Bible Study Guides by Dee: A Woman's Journey through Ruth, A Woman's Journey through Luke, The Joy of Women's Friendships, The Joy of Hospitality, The Joy of Eating Right, A woman of Value ( Proverbs), A woman of Insight (Ecclesiastes), A woman of Joy (1-3 John). Excellent Study on Esther!

This has been one of the best studies I have ever used for my small group women's bible study. It has completely changed the way I read the book of Esther. Dee Brestin gives a thorough biblical, historical and practical guide to studying Esther. While the study focuses on Esther, Brestin incorporates numerous examples of scriptures from both OT and NT. She supports all her statements and arguments with scripture and/or historical documentation. Brestin's study is a perfect balance of exegesis as well as practical applications to modern day life. The study is challenging and will bring all those who use it to a closer walk with the Lord and a greater appreciation for His Word. As a leader the study is easy to follow, each chapter is interesting -- it is never repetitive or stagnant. Each of the women in the group (ages 19-30) have been challenged and impressed.

You need to study Esther!

Last summer I did this bible study with a small group of friends. I chose this study because none of us knew much about Esther. We had a wonderful time! The weekly amount of homework was just right, and 8 lessons fit into the summer perfectly. We all felt like we really knew Esther by the end of the 8 weeks - her strengths and weaknesses. And we could identify with both. We saw that we can be used by the Lord in spite of our imperfections and even wrong choices. Dee Brestin brought out truths and insights that I would have just read right over. The questions asked in the book led my group into some great discussions. Bottom line was that it was a time for us to grow closer to the Lord and to eachother - the perfect way to spend the summer.

Excellent examination & inspiration of holy scripture

I thought I knew God's scriptures but the author proved to me that there's a lot to God's Word. We as mere hurried humans must take the time to read, compare, contrast, meditate and act on one verse at a time.Comparing the book of Esther to other books in the Old and New Testaments is so enlightening. Unlike many established male religious leaders, she allowed the Believer to search the actual passage to answer each question, as opposed to giving her own opinion as scriptural fact. Since Dee's book is for a Bible study group, it's a wonderful way to learn God's Word without the dogma, ritual or sanctuary politics which often occur on Sunday mornings. The hymns, Detective for the Divine, questions, and introduction all made the scriptures "come to life" instead being read and forgotten. It is this Believer's wish that the author will do the same for EACH of the 66 books in the Holy Bible. Thank you, Dee, for helping me to worship & praise God in Christ with greater love and understanding.
