A Charming Novel That You Can't Put Down

Cynthia Sterling's second novel is a gem. A story of love between two individuals from different cultures in a small town in Texas in 1855. Tessa, a widow, hires half-breed, Micah, to help her take care of her farm, and finds herself immediately attracted to him. But the ghost of her dead husband, Will, who has hung around to watch over her, decides that a love affair between the engaging couple is the last thing he wants, and he sets about to disrupt their romance. Ms. Sterling's novel is, by turns, innocently touching, sweetly sensual and at times, hilarious, especially when Will whispers a suggestion into the ear of the local vicar to court Tessa, and is mistaken for the voice of someone higher up. Ms. Sterling spins an irresistible tale with A WILLING SPIRIT, and I can't wait for her next Haunting Hearts book.

Another Brilliant Cast of Unforgettable Characters

After reading (and loving) Cynthia Sterling's debut book, PATCHWORK HEARTS, I couldn't wait for A WILLING SPIRIT to hit the shelves. Brava!--Sterling delivered again! It's rare to read a story so well-crafted that you find yourself laughing out loud one minute and dabbing away tears the next. The main characters, Micah and Tessa, ripped me along on a satisfying roller coaster of emotions, while the rich cast of fabulous secondary characters kept me firmly grounded in the story setting. In fact, I'd have to say A WILLING SPIRIT's stellar secondary characters alone are worth the price of the book. (I still think of Will the ghost and the Indian chief and grin.) All that and a satisfying love story, to boot. Combine it all with Sterling's exquisite historical detail, and A WILLING SPIRIT is the total package. Americana fans will adore it--paranormal fans will find it fresh and enticing. What more could a discerning romance reader want? But hey, please DON'T take my word for it. Order the book and find out for yourself. I absolutely guarantee, once you enter A WILLING SPIRIT's fictional world, you'll be haunting the bookstores for the next Cynthia Sterling release. In 1855 Pony Springs, Texas, widow Tessa Bright struggles to work her farm and tend to the horses ever since her broken arm was placed in a cast. Though totally shunned by the townsfolk, Tessa is not alone as the spirit of her deceased spouse Will remains her steady companion while providing her advice. A traveler arrives on foot offering to sell the saddle he carries to Tessa. Instead, she offers to sell breed Micah Fox a horse. However, neither have the money to complete a cash transaction. Instead, she hires Micah to work on the farm while her arm heals. Will tells Tessa that Micah is not the right person for her. He plans to find her a spouse to take care of her. She warns him not to frighten Micah into leaving because he is the first person to agree to help her. Will manifests himself as a hermit warning Micah to stay away from Tessa. Following that, Will journeys to town to find a husband for Tessa. He chooses Reverend Deering, obviously a respectable person. Even with otherworldly interference, Tessa is a stubborn person who will choose whom she wants when she wants. By jove, Cynthia Sterling provides fans of supernatural romance with a clever ghost story. The story line is fast-paced as Tessa and Micah begin to fall in love but he needs to figuratively and literally overcome the ghost of Will who holds onto Tessa's heart. The prejudices against the lead protagonists add depth that brings the period to life. Fans of otherworldly romances will take immense pleasure from Ms. Sterling's latest story, A WILLING SPIRIT because it is simply an entertaining novel.Harriet Klausner
