Orbae was an island of myth and fable, lost forever except for the work of its cartographers. Place creates an entire world for the reader to discover and marvel at. This is the first of three volumes... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Imagine there are Islands, each shaped like a letter of the alphabet, and on those islands exist unique cultures that seem like many of our own yet are somehow different. Imagine an expert watercolorists/anthropologist visiting these islands one by one and describing and painting in detail what he finds there - the strange myths, the materials used for building, the animals, the gods, the modes of transport. Through the gradual accretion of detail the French illustrator, François Place brings a whole alternative world to life. But don't expect to be hurried along; a kind of nineteenth century patience and appreciation is needed. That's why most kids won't get it, but for those that do... The first in a series of books (the others are already published in French) I can only assume that it didn't make enough money for the rest to be translated. Probably not a simple enough experience for the media-addled.
