A Shimmer On the Horizon

Philip Teece's A SHIMMER ON THE HORIZON is a wonderfully-written, evocative narrative of a summer-long journey up the west coast of Bristish Columbia and admidst the islets, islands, slate waters, and deceptively powerful currents that characterize the region. Teece and his sailing partner Mary sail in tandem up the Strait of Georgia and beyond Desolation Sound in search of solitude, beauty and quiet waters. As they travel, together and alone, their journey is also a personal one, one of growing acquiatance and friendship turning into romance; one also of personal discovery especially for the author who finds himself emerging from "a kind of spiritual paralysis" that had "held me in its cold grip" so that once more joy, beauty, adventure and possibility could exist....Why journey in little boats? All of us who find some of our life incomplete without wind in the sails and without slow unfolding of cove, beach, promontory and point will find some of the answers here. It is Teece's journey, to be sure. But in sharing it, providing us with glimpses from the cockpit of his little stalwart GALADRIEL, he opens up the coastal world of wester British Columbia and invites us to share its joys and rigors with him.
