The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library, founded in 1955, is a non-profit organization working to support the educational, cultural, and outreach programs of the Library. As part of that mission, the Friends have supported the Berkeley History Room in the Central Library ever since its inception in 2001, providing funds for equipment and sponsoring programs. Meanwhile, we've been scanning all Berkeley-related book donations for possible inclusion in the History Room collection. As part of that latter process, the Friends became aware of the History Room's Fiction Set in Berkeley. Working with that initial list, and together with Library staff, we've produced a selected list of over 175 books in which Berkeley serves as a story location, in passing or throughout. Many of the books listed here go a step further-Berkeley moves from being a location to being...well, almost a character. Jane Langton, describing author Richard Lupoff's writings, suggests "This is more than simple description, it's social commentary.... The landscape isn't merely a background against which events happen. Rather it has an organic relation to the story." Perhaps rather than books set in Berkeley, this compilation could more properly be considered Berkeley...set in books.
