Much for us all to ponder

As a middle-aged woman I have experienced various relationships with men in my personal life, career, and with my father. This book has helped me understand some of my actions with these men; why I have acted like I did throughout my life. The book helped me understand the views men have of women, and women of men. Most importantly, it showed me unhealthy ways men and women deal with each other, and why. It explains how to progress into a path of understanding and healthy interaction and respect. Some of this may be in contradiction to what Dr. Laura preaches and I would like to get her take on this book as it relates to her teachings on the 'proper care and feeding of a husband'.

Why gender equity is needed.

Parity is a priority. Or it must be soon. These authors show why a new appreciation for gender equity is needed. Why the polarity of either dominance or subordinance among males/females doesn't work. At the office. At home. On the town. Throughout one's life. This is a revised and expanded edition of a pioneering book first launched about ten years ago which sought to nurture dialogue between men and women toward a more harmonious context in which to live and work. These new pages reflect an even better understanding of the dynamics among colleagues, especially with updated observations on people of color and gay, lesbian, and bisexual people. Old habits die hard. "The interplay of gender, race, sexual orientation, and class is a reality of our society. Accepting that it is (is) necessary if we are to move on the struggle toward equity." Separate chapers examine men and women in transition, characteristics common to dominant and subordinate conditions. Relevant graphics drive home strategic points, and a terrific fold-out at the back tracks "traditional" women and men toward a common ground. From violence and helplessness to mutual powerment. Why not just pass new laws? Been there, done that. "The law and the legal process still lag far behind the values held by most women and many men. There are limits to what the laws can accomplish." That's why the new paradigm set forth in this book is so valuable. It clearly explains what the problems are, in text and graphics, then points to a trail of solutions. Get with it.
