In this book, he becomes a resourceful and brave miner at home beneath the ground. Where he first understands the meaning of darkness. While finding his feet in this new environment, he quickly learns to tread on people who get in his way.
Frank takes what he wants, but he is also charming and attractive. And if anothers' needs coincide with his, he will help; otherwise, don't get in the way. He resents the wealth and privilege of men like George Clennell, the owner of Tredonwell House, where his mother works. They seem to have it all and are willing to make money from the sweat of their employees and profit from the coming war. Frank wants no part of it, but sometimes luck deals the wrong cards. Frank always blames someone else.
After a disaster at Wheal Jenna where he works, he takes a job at a mine near his childhood home. That brings him closer to his mother. He quickly finds himself pursued by his boss's daughter Emily but prefers the more experienced Bal Maid Jenny Bottalack. Although he inevitably tries to keep himself to himself, he finds he will not be allowed to stay out of the drift into war. He is accused of an assault on another worker, and the police want to interview him. The mine Captain John Nichols is also eager to talk to him about his relationship with Emily.
He and his mother agree that it would be better to leave the area and lose himself in the anonymity of the British army.
