?(...) Each fairy tale is a relatively closed system, expressing an unique and essential psychological sense, which is translated into a series of images and of symbolic events. (...) All fairy tales try to describe one and unique factor, so complex and significant, so difficult to represent in all its different aspects, that hundreds of stories and thousands of versions (comparable to the variations of a musical theme) are necessary for this unknown factor penetrate the consciousness without, at the same time, the theme being exhausted. This unknown factor is what Jung calls the Self, which is the psychic totality of the individual, while he is also, paradoxically, the regulating centre of the collective unconscious. Therefore each individual, each people has its own way of experiencing this psychic reality. The various fairy tales offer general sketches of the different phases of this experience. Some refer to the initial phase that corresponds to the integration of the shadow and only give a brief summary of what will follow. Others discuss the experience of the animus or of the anima, as well of the images of the father and of the mother who constitute its background, and move equally well on the previous problems concerning the shadow, as well as on its development. Still others will develop the theme of the inaccessible treasure or impossible to obtain, and other central experiences of the same order. There is no qualitative difference between these tales because, in the archetypal domain, there is no scale of values, for the simple reason that each archetype is, in its essence, one of the aspects of the collective unconscious, while always represents the totality of the latter.?
